Charcoal Work

Quite simply, using charcoal is the most fun i can have when I am creating any form of Art. I have always had a very traditional approach to my work, and in fact, for the longest time I only worked in Graphite. I have always liked to be in complete control of the work I am producing, scrutinising any slight mistake.  But I found myself being bogged down for long hours working on even the smallest scale.

I knew I wanted to scale up, and I knew I wanted to try and be more loose with my work. And I knew that meant introducing a new Medium - Charcoal.

The Learning Curve

I experimented with a variety of Charcoal brands, I tried combining Charcoal and Graphite and ultimately it was a challenge trying to find a balance between control and freedom wile I was drawing.

Ultimately I found myself still working at a relatively small scale. Despite being happy with the quality I was producing, I still needed to scale up.

Scaling Up!

I eventually moved onto using Charcoal Powder and I applied this using make up brushes to create the initial form/shape of what ever I was drawing. Using kneaded erasers and blending sticks i would then build up the image until finally complete.

My brush strokes became more free and I naturally needed to work bigger because of the powdered Charcoal. I was still able to apply the detail and precision at the latter stages of the drawing too.

It went against everything I originally did while drawing. Until the very end, everything looks like chaos. Gradually the drawing would start to emerge and I could see the finish line.

Charcoal & Acrylic

Introducing colour into my pieces was always a priority. As was transitioning onto Canvas rather than Paper. It took a lot of research, and trial and error but eventually I found a solution. A way to prepare a canvas and make it as smooth as paper and still absorbent like a canvas should be.

Working this way has created a unique style to me. Its taken a lot of patience, trial and error and countless frustrating drawing sessions. But its been completely worth it!
